May 1, 1945. Fleeing through northern Germany, François finds refuge with a group of fugitives from across Europe. Hidden in a ruined building deep within the forest, they struggle to survive while gradually getting to know one another. François grows close to Maria, a Soviet woman determined to rejoin the Red Army. But when he decides to take in two German children despite Maria's and the others' opposition, deep ideological divisions emerge, threatening the group's fragile balance. Freely inspired by the life of François Cavanna.
